Smoky quartz is a translucent to opaque brown or black variety of quartz crystal whose colour results from natural radiation exposure, which causes the formation of aluminium centres within the silicon structure. Known for its grounding, protective, and energy-clearing properties, this stone is used in jewellery, as a decorative crystal, and in crystal healing practices to absorb negative energy and promote emotional balance.
Characteristics
- Color: Ranges from light brownish-grey to a deep brownish-black.
- Clarity: Can be almost completely transparent to opaque.
- Composition: A variety of silicon dioxide (quartz), coloured by trace amounts of aluminium and exposure to natural gamma rays.
- Minerals: The name Morion is used for the nearly black variety.
Origin and Formation
- Smoky quartz forms through a hydrothermal process where warm, mineral-rich groundwater interacts with rocks.
- The presence of aluminium in the water and subsequent exposure to natural radioactivity are responsible for the characteristic smoky colour.
Uses and Beliefs
- Jewellery: It is cut into beautiful faceted gemstones for use in jewellery.
- Crystal Healing:
- Protection: Considered a powerful protection stone that absorbs and transmutes negative energy.
- Grounding: Its earthy tones are associated with grounding, providing a sense of stability and calm.
- Emotional Balance: Helps to alleviate stress, fear, and depression, and promotes positive thoughts and emotional calmness.
- Energy Clearing: Used to cleanse spaces and auras, and believed to absorb and hold negativity away from the user.
